Chapter 17

“What?” I asked. “Do I have something on my face?”

“Handsomeness,” he replied. “Just some handsomeness.” Then he quickly stood and said down to me, “Sit here for a seconds’ spell.” He exited the room, dashed upstairs, came back down the narrow flight of mahogany-colored steps, and placed a five hundred-piece puzzle on coffee table in front of us. “I’ve had this sitting around for quite some time. My Lancaster sister brought it with her when she visited me last spring. She’s huge on puzzling, and she’s quite good at it. Didn’t take it with her. What do you say we have at it?”

“Hot air balloons floating over the desert. Not too shabby. We can do this,” I said, picking up the box and admiring its luscious and bright colors. “Should we time us or just enjoy its solace?”

“Let’s just enjoy it. If Gia returns for another visit, I’ll send her your way. The two of you can compete.”

“Love that idea. I’m always up for a puzzle championship under my belt.”
