“Do you think you could persuade Liberty to switch sides?” Blaise asked.
Stella’s face looked troubled. “I don’t know. I could try.”
“Stella.” Her eyes met Rory’s. He held her gaze, and she didn’t look away; she didn’t even blink. After a long, measuring look, he spoke.
“Are you on our side?”
Stella opened her mouth, but no sound came out.
“You didn’t tell Jane why we’re here. You could have, and everything would have been forgiven. If you’d just told her what she’s been trying to figure out all this time, you wouldn’t have been punished. She’d have rewarded you instead.”
Stella’s eyes were pained. “No, I didn’ttell her. She was slicing me open with her terrible little dagger, and I didn’t tell her. Do you know why?”
“Tell me.”
“I want Jane to fall so that everyone who lives under her tyrannical rule can be free again. I just didn’t think I’d have to take a role in bringing her down.” Stella’s bottom lip trembled. “I’m not that brave, you see.”
