Chapter 6

“We’re kind of in a big hurry,” Sam said. “The resort opens this summer, and they managed to get around regulations for wastewater and trash. It’s going to ruin people’s lives.”

Rainn exhaled. He’d seen enough of Dominica to know most of the people didn’t have much. Then he imagined being in a jail cell and bit his lip. He couldn’t believe this night had been about the hotel and not romance. Still, it did sound like they were desperate. “Let me think about it.”

Cyprian handed the thumb drive to Sam in case Rainn agreed to take it later. “Okay, but please don’t think long.”

Rainn’s sense of being used was too strong. “If you don’t mind, I’d like to go home.”

Sam grimaced and nodded. “I’m sorry. We’ll talk on the way.”

Sam borrowed Cyprian’s Jeep. Until they were on a paved road, he said little.

“Again, I’m sorry,” he eventually said. “I really, really do like you.”

Rainn liked Sam, too. His beautiful face, his smile, his musical voice. “But you’re asking me to break the law.”
