Before Dakota could rush to her side, Bahaar swooped in and helped her back to her seat. He brushed some dirt off of Ken’s jeans and kneeled in front of her. “Meperidine. Two fifty milligram tablets. For the pain. You were very brave to weather it for as long as you did, but I saw no need for you to undergo any further agony, Miss Crossley, at least for this morning. Especially not after bringing me such a gift.”

She glared at him. “Meri-what? I don’t know what that is. And they’re not yours. We can pay you for helping, but they’re mine! I’m not giving them to you!”
