Ken calmed down visibly. Her stance, however, didn’t change in the slightest. “If you wanted it bad enough, if you missed him enough, I think you could convince yourself. I think you don’t wanna let him go, and you found a way that you didn’t have to.” She cleared her throat and took a step toward him. Pulling out her notebook and a pen, she opened to the first blank page. “The dead don’t come back to life, dad. They don’t. But if you don’t believe me, then let’s test it.”

“What? How?” he barely managed to reply.

Another step. “Get him to say something you’ve never heard him say. In Creole. Remember it, and we’ll look it up right after. If the statement checks out, then maybe you’re right. Maybe his spirit really is visiting you.”

“And if it doesn’t?”
