Chapter 68

With Yuuki—and Dakota—waiting, Ken couldn’t afford to waste any more time. She hesitated only long enough to ensure that the old man wouldn’t immediately be shoved back out into the rain. When it seemed the family intended to keep their word, she jogged back to the truck, got inside, and started the engine. The rain that soaked into her clothes made her shiver.

“What the hell was that about?!” Yuuki asked in a low tone that dripped with a mix of fear and anger.

What, indeed. Ken wasn’t sure why she wanted to risk herself for an elderly man who probably didn’t have that many years left in his natural life. But she did it anyway. And it felt good, to help someone. “We’re surrounded by hopelessness. A little help goes a long way, right? Maybe we can’t rescue this whole city, but I dunno, I wanted to save someone. And now those people know how they can help each other, help themselves.”

“Save someone? Like your father?”
