Chapter 69

Even with the doors and windows of her truck closed, Ken could smell the unmistakable stench of charred flesh and hair, mixed with gasoline. It filled her lungs. It overwhelmed her all over again.

With the truck still moving slowly, Yuuki jumped out, ran around the back, and opened the driver’s side door. She undid Kenna’s belt and hopped up on the vehicle. “Move over to the other seat,” she ordered calmly. “Ken, I need you to move so I can drive. Ken, please!”

Though she complied, she barely understood what she was doing. She let go of the wheel first, and the truck swerved before Yuuki took hold of it. As she settled in as a passenger in her own vehicle, Yuuki closed the door, slammed her foot on the gas, and peeled away from the site. She didn’t acknowledge the problem until they could no longer see the glow in their rearview mirror

“Are you all right?” she asked, still out of breath from the sprint. “What just happened? I thought you were used to this kind of shit.”
