Chapter 24

He kisses the top of my head and rubs his nose on my hair. I must look positively Einsteinian now, considering all the attention my poor hair has gotten today.

“I was worried,” he mumbles.

“I’m fine.”

“Yeah, but—”

“Dylan came with me.” I’m grateful for my brother’s silent support despite my initial complaints. Doubly so now when I feel the tension bleeding away from Poe just from knowing I had someone to back me up. I’ll make sure to thank my brother properly later. “Your mom asked about you. She was worried.”

“I’ll call her later.”

I nod and inhale his comforting scent. The woodsy smell of his aftershave is like coming home. “I called your dad a coward and told him I’d call the police if he touches you again.”

“You did?”

“Yes.”

His arms tighten around me. “Where did all this fierceness come from?”

I shrug. “I was just…so angry. I hatehim for punching you. Andhe was going to grab your Mom, but your brother stepped in front of her and refused to let him.”
