Chapter 25

“I know, Mama. I love you, too. But I won’t go back to the house when he’s around until he’s apologized.” He hums and nods at whatever she’s saying, then, “I’ll come visit, Mama, whenever he’s not home. And you’re welcome here anytime.”

His gaze meets mine. Of course, I mouth.

“Auden extends his invitation, too. But I can’t come for Christmas, Mama. I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I can’t.”

After that, he hangs up and embraces me. I snuggle close, happy to be back in his arms. Am I pathetic for missing him this badly after not having seen him for thirteen hours? Maybe, but I don’t care.

“Are you all right?” I ask.

He exhales. “Yeah.”

“Sure?”

“Well…” He backs us against the counter, splaying his hands on my hips. I rest my palms on his wide chest and allow the intimacy between us to recharge me after a long day.

“Of course I wish I could spend Christmas with her, but you know why I can’t…” His voice breaks and I cup his face in my hands, our gazes meeting.
