He wandered into the kitchen. Kayla sat at the table, a half-eaten yogurt cup abandoned at her elbow. Her brow was furrowed as she wrote out a list on the back of a piece of junk mail. Rob hesitated as he peeked into a cabinet and grabbed a protein bar. Jack and Kayla had both told him to help himself to anything in the house that he wanted, but he still felt too much like a guest to take them at face value.

Kayla looked up with a smile as he sat across from her. “Do you need anything from the liquor store?” she asked. “I’m making a list. I’ll be picking up supplies after dinner.”

“Supplies?”

“For the party tomorrow.” She tapped her pen against the list. “We’ve gotta ring in the summer right, yeah?”

“Yeah. Sounds good.” Rob took a bite of his protein bar. He wasn’t sure how good it actually sounded. He still struggled to get comfortable with his role in the group. A bunch of strangers traipsing through the house was unlikely to improve the situation.
