Chapter 30

It should have been fine. But it wasn’t.

Rob sighed and shook his head as he smiled and handed the bottle back to Brandon. “Excuse me,” he said, “but I’ve gotta go…check on something.”

Brandon looked disappointed, and a little confused, but he nodded in understanding. “Right,” he said. “Well, you know…I’ll be here, if you change your mind.” The resignation in his voice confirmed that he knew Rob wouldn’t be back.

Rob made his way down to the surf, where Jack stood alone. His feet were sunk into the sand as the water whorled around his ankles. Rob stood next to Jack and bumped their shoulders together. “You taking a break from the crowd?”

Jack shrugged. “I guess.” His eyes flickered down to Rob’s shoes. “The fuck are you wearing on your feet?”

“What’s wrong?” Rob teased. “You don’t think I can rock the rhinestones?”
