Rob was fairly certain that bonfires weren’t allowed on the beach, especially not bonfires with flames that loomed as high as his shoulders. But no one else seemed to be concerned, and truth be told, he wasn’t quite sober enough to care. Besides, if trouble came their way, they’d be able to charm their way out of it.

Earlier that evening, once the lifeguard stand was off duty and naps had been taken, everyone had indulged in a few hours of serious pregaming. They’d tossed back some experimental concoctions courtesy of a Sambuca sale at the local liquor store, and smoked a few joints laced with an unidentifiable herb from Alex’s personal stores. Aaron and Alex had begged off the rest of the evening, but Rob, Jack, Anya, and Kayla had cycloned their way to the AD.
