“I wish I could say you don’t have to worry about that.” He had to struggle with his breath to keep his voice even. “But some people are always going to disappoint you, and hurt you, no matter how much you might love them.”

“So why bother with anybody? Maybe I shouldn’t be so frightened of being alone. Maybe I should just embrace it now. Then I won’t have to worry about disappointing them, either.”

“No.” His hand stopped at the back of Gage’s neck, firm enough for Gage to glance up at him. “No.I said some people. I don’t think you could ever be that person.”

“You don’t know that. I’ve certainly disappointed my family.”

“Because they can’t get past their religion to see the amazing young man they raised. That’s a different kind of disappointment. You can’t do anything about that except hope that someday they decide to open their eyes.”
