“You haven’t done anything to me to feel guilty about.” He held out his hand. “Give me your keys. I’ll let us in.”

“Yes, I have,” Gage said, obediently handing over his key ring. “I have, I’ve sinned. And I’m scared. And I’m tired of being scared.”

Christopher remained silent until they were both inside Gage’s dark apartment. Gage’s confession was dangerous territory. Wasn’t this part of why he’d tried to push him away from the start?

One wrong step, and people got hurt. Those who were scared often became reckless, taking chances they might not normally, bearing the repercussions because there was no other alternative. You couldn’t erase mistakes. You couldn’t take back decisions. Forward was the only option.

He wasn’t sure where the light switch was, and Gage made no move to reach for it. Sliding the keys into his pocket, he smoothed his hand up to Gage’s shoulder, then pulled him in for a brief hug.
