“Why don’t you shut up,” she countered.

“Don’t tell him to shut up,” Jade yelled, “when he’s shown me more sensitivity than you ever have. Or probably ever will.”

Belle looked stricken by that last remark. Jade was about to apologize when she showed the old flash and lash.

“Oh, that’s right, I’m always the bitch, aren’t I?” she said, her voice swelling.

“Belle, no one is saying you’re a bitch,” Lleyton offered.

“Stay out of it,” she snapped.

She turned her full fury on her brother:

“But what about you, Jade? You run out of town to Ms. Martinez, like no one knows what’s going on. You could bring her to dinner. Lleyton and I wouldn’t disgrace you.”

“It isn’t about that,” Jade said.

“Then what is it about?” she wondered.
