“Look, I’ll be at Hospice as soon as I can.”
“Wait!”
“Yes?”
“You don’t have to come here. Don’t you understand? I broke up with you. We’re through.”
“Yes, I understood. I’ll be there as soon as I can,” he repeated.
“Hyde…”
“Yes?”
“Drive carefully. I don’t want you to die getting here.”
“I won’t, blue eyes. Hang in there.” He hung up, and I put my phone away.
I was happy for about two seconds, and then I wanted to kick myself in the ass. How stupid was this? Now I’d have to break up with him all over again.
If it wouldn’t have come across as a foolish repeat of my actions earlier today, I’d have thrown my cell phone at the nearest wall.
But…for this short amount of time, he was still mine.
I resumed my pacing and was at the far end of the hall once again when the nurse came out of Granddad’s room and looked around. I was already sprinting back to her by the time she spotted me.
“Is he all right?”
