Mindy’s face was white, but she forced a smile and went to her. “Mummy, why don’t you let me take you inside? It’s cooler, and I’ll get you a cup of tea.” She slid an arm around her mother’s waist.

“I can’t stay for the wedding,” Mrs. Richardson said. “Kipp, I’m so sorry—”

“No need to be.” But had she even heard me?

“After the fool Aaron’s made not only of himself but of me…Can I even remain with him any longer?”
