Hunter was waiting for Michael to say he was just asking him as a friend, two buddies out on the town, but he didn’t. Not sure he should go on and wondering if he’d said enough already, he kept talking anyway. “You see, I really do like being alone. Too many times, people have hurt me, betrayed me even. And someone, not so long ago, made me think he ruined any hope for happiness I might have had.” Hunter shook his head. “I don’t want to go into details now. But I know there are good people around. And I think you’re one of them. But I enjoy my own company. It’s the main reason I’m so unwilling to part with Beaumont House.”

Michael shook his head, his lips drawn together in a thin line. Hunter was stunned at the spite in his voice.

“You’re only kidding yourself.”
