“Think you can manage—one-armed?”

Hunter smiled but then faltered. His gaze fell to his lap. “I don’t know.”

When Hunter looked up, the tears flowed again. Michael pulled him close. Hunter grabbed him, holding tight, digging his fingers into Michael’s curls. He kissed him, and they lingered for a long while in the embrace.

When they finally parted, Hunter brushed the tears away. “How can you stand to kiss me?”

“That’s not funny.”

They sat for a moment, holding hands. Michael said, “Hunter, I don’t want you to go away.”

“It’s not like you’ll never see me again. Maybe you could even come with—”

But Michael was already shaking his head. “That life—the big city—is not for me. I’ve tried it.”

Hunter realized with Michael’s simple words, he was pointing out something that was true for him as well.

Michael took Hunter’s chin in his hand and gently turned his face toward his own. “I do have another idea.”

Hunter hoped against hope what the idea was. “Yes?”
