In spite of his shame, he knew Nana’s friends were writing out of obligation and conforming to social standards. Could he really turn to any of them for a place to stay? He might have asked Ian, but Ian was with his grandmother now. And sure, some of these lonely old women might take Hunter in, out of compassion and loyalty to their friend, but did he really want that? Did he really want their doting care?

But what were the alternatives? A hotel room? Who would help him there?

Michael? It was a wonderful idea, but Hunter had not exactly treated him well or welcomed his advances. Sure, he had been here at the hospital a lot and seemed genuinely concerned about him, but would that concern extend to convalescent care? In spite of everything, they really didn’t know each other that well, and to expect such an imposition was going above and beyond their current relationship.
