“Yeah” was all he came up with. A single word that hung between them as if Trevor had asked all the questions bouncing around his head. As if the lack of an answer shined a light on all the things he hadn’t said. He swallowed and scrambled to redirect the conversation. “So do you always spend the weekend talking to your friends online?”

Smooth. Way to make Chase sound like a shut-in. Trevor mentally patted himself on the back.

Chase heaved one shoulder and let it drop. “I only have one year left, and everyone has their friends circle already, except the freshmen, so it’s hard to worm my way in.”

“Did you join any clubs?” Jesus fuck, was Trevor his guidance counselor now?

“No. I figured I’d keep my head down, focus on my grades, and get through the year.”

Something in Chase’s voice pushed Trevor to ask, “But is that what you want?”
