Head lowering, Josephine placed her hands at the sides of Travis’s face. When she looked up again, her eyes had changed from brown to a distinct golden color. Which meant only one thing.

“No.” His lip quivered. “No. Please, Josie, don’t do this to me.”

“I’m sorry,” she whispered, and Travis believed that. “But you need to let them look at you. I promise, it’ll be okay. Hold still, Travis.”

Too compelled by her hypnotist’s eyes to move, tears slipped from Travis’s eyes as he continued to hold onto Niko for as long as he could. He had no idea how many people were in the room with them, but Josephine, without breaking eye-contact, gestured to one of them. This person placed their hands at the back of Travis’s neck.
