Chapter 29

When the song ended, a round of applause broke out. Not only at their table, but the surrounding tables as well and Dexter suddenly remembered that he was in a diner, not some kitchen with a group of friends.

He laughed and waved to everyone, accepting the clapping, and even a bit of whistling, graciously. Then Dexter, big smile still on his face, got a glimpse of the guy sitting next to him. Colin, elbows on the table with his chin in his palms, had this doe-eyed expression on his face. He gazed at Dexter as though seeing him for the first time.

Dexter didn’t get stage fright, never really did, but with Colin giving him that look—one he didn’t understand at all—butterflies filled his stomach and he shrunk into his shoulders.

“What?” he squeaked. “What’s that look for?”

Colin leaned his head back, not breaking the eye contact, and said, “I kinda wanna have sex with your voice.”
