Chapter 72

“No, Colin,” he whispered. “It doesn’t.” When the heartbroken expression crushed Colin’s face, Dexter held onto his shoulders and told him, “It gets easier. I swear, it does. There’s going to be a big hole, for a long time. For a while you’ll think it’ll never go away, and you’ll feel it, always on birthdays and holidays and random days, but…it’ll be filled, I promise. With good times and love and friends. It will.”

“Dexter…”

Colin leaned the edge of his brow against Dexter’s chest and cried for a long time. Dexter held him in his arms. Rocked him gently. People passed by them, some of them staring, others not paying one bit of attention. They stayed like that for an immeasurable amount of time until Colin said something about going home.

They went back to Colin’s place and, really, Colin was doing so much better by the time they got there.
