“No!” Colin insisted. “I have to call the hospital. I have to…”


“I talked to Darcie already,” Dexter said. “Your mom’s still sleeping. She’s more stable. Doctor said she can go home this afternoon. Later. Darcie said she’ll call you when your mom wakes up.”


Colin passed a hand over his face. “You…called for me?”


“Yeah. It’s Friday, ‘kay? You have no classes. Just relax for now.” Dexter stared at him for a moment. He looked…intense. Like something might be worrying him, but then he kissed his forehead and smiled. “You want me to stay?”


“Um…” Yes. Colin always wanted him to stay. “No. That’s okay. Go meet Maddie. I’ll…” He paused. Studied Dexter’s face again. Something felt off. “See you later?”


“You…” Colin’s stomach twisted. “You promise?”
