Sean simply covered Arliss’s hands with his own. He said softly, “You don’t have to be defensive. It’s okay. I get it. And I appreciate your telling me this upfront. I think that was really brave.”

Arliss blew out a sigh. “I don’t know about brave. But I thought you should know.” He grinned. “So you can make an informed decision.”

“I appreciate that.”

“Anyway, I eventually got myself situated. Got a job as a barback at one of the leather bars on Halsted. Minimum wage, but it was honest work, and it led to me getting on at Tricks.”

Sean noticed how Arliss’s face lit up with pride when he mentioned Tricks and made a mental note to never denigrate the place or what the kid did for a living. It was obvious he was proud of his job. And why not? When you consider the things he had done before to get by, things Sean didn’t want to think too closely about.
