Chapter 22

It was afternoon by the time we stopped by the beach near Port Huron as a spur-of-the-moment decision, which was an hour northeast. I’d figured it would’ve been quite busy for the day being a warm Sunday, and parking was a hassle to find because of not arriving early enough. We didn’t even take much with us, just a huge blanket and two towels, since we wore our swim trunks and left our tank tops in the car. We also had money to buy from whatever kiosk we could find, or we could simply walk to the nearest store without losing our parking spot.

We rushed toward the sandy shore of Lake Huron, and it made me thankful that I could buy some more time to collect myself enough to tell Topher the dirty truth.

Despite the initial frigidness, he wasted no time splashing his way down the shallow water until he reached a deeper spot and dunk in. He popped back up to the surface with his shoulders barely peeking, and he slapped on a goofy grin. “Come on in!”
