“Thanks,” I said, pulling on my pajama bottoms under the towel still wrapped around my waist. Orestes watched this and snorted.

“I don’t remember you being so shy,” he commented. “So, why rob me of the view?”

I flushed but smiled and shrugged.

When I had my pajama top on as well, I looked at him again.

“How come you’re here?” I asked.

He stared momentarily. “Didn’t you know? Anatole has been taken to the hospital. I’m his next of kin; they notified me.”

“Oh. Yeah, I did know. I was the one who called 9-1-1.”

Orestes nodded. “They say he fell, that they don’t think it was a stroke, and it definitely wasn’t a heart attack. Do you know anything more?”

I shook my head. “I was downstairs when he fell.”

Orestes nodded, then looked at the door. “What goes with that?”

“What?”

“It looks like it was broken open, for one thing. But that’s not what I mean. I mean that the—configuration, it’s all wrong.”

I looked at him. “What are you talking about?”
