Chapter 6

“As long as I’ve got these out, do you have anything you need mending?” Her gaze jumped over his clothing. “Though I’m going to have to wash those soon. They probably haven’t seen soap since you left Wyoming, am I right?”

Kenneth smiled. “Yes, ma’am, and I can’t vouch that they’ve ever seen soap before that. I don’t have any mending, though. All of my clothes are in good repair.”

Even if he did have mending, he couldn’t imagine imposing further on Amy. He didn’t want her to worry about their clothes, or food, or bedding. She only needed to concentrate on Leon. Kenneth slowly unwrapped the bandages from his foot, the way she had shown him, then dipped them in the hot water. The dim light hid the real horror of Leon’s foot—skin shouldn’t be that shade of purple, and a bone shouldn’t look so twisted and mangled.
