“You’re not going to make this easy, are you?” Todd asked. The pastor raised his eyebrows and shook his head slowly, but didn’t say a word. Todd sighed and made a very put-out face. A soft clunk came from somewhere under the floor. When the pastor started turning back toward the pulpit, Todd grabbed his forearm and said, “Look, I came in here wanting to give a donation, and I figured you’d be the man to help me. That is your job, isn’t it? Helping people?”

“Yes, but…did you hear that?”

“Hear what?” Todd patted the pastor’s back. “Are you feeling all right?”

“I really have to check to see what that noise was.”

“Reverend, there was no noise.”

“You didn’t hear anything?” the pastor asked.

Todd shook his head. “Now, about that donation.”

“Why?”

“Huh?” Todd asked, rubbing at the back of his neck with his other hand.

“Why is a gambler so concerned with the people here, people he rips off?”
