Chapter 38

Savannah tensed and held her breath. Nick sighed and grumbled, “Oh sure, piss him off.” Hauling Savannah with him, Nick scooted down the row of shelves, trying to get a better look.

Benning flicked his wrist, and Todd was lifted off the floor and thrown into the room. Nick heard him land, holding his breath until there was more swearing and smartass remarks.

Savannah pulled Nick’s hand away from her mouth. “What is that?”

“Unless you want to die, keep your voice down.”

“But—”

“Really,” Nick snapped in a whisper, “be quiet. Spirits can move objects and people by manipulating the energy around them. That man there”—he pointed to Benning—”is a demon, and I suspect does the same thing.”

“That other man is your owner, isn’t he?”

“Uh-huh.” Nick bumped his fingertips against her shoulder.

“Let’s go that way. They won’t see you.”

“He’s not really a gambler, is he?”
