Chapter 37

“No, please…I can’t swim.”

Nick reached down and grabbed one of Leo’s legs, lifting him. “Sure you can. All slaves are taught to swim. It’s a law.”

“But I’m not—” When Nick lifted him a few inches higher, Leo whimpered, “Okay. Stop! Okay!” Leo was gripping Nick’s jacket.

“Where?” Nick snarled.

“There are storerooms down where the crews’ quarters are.”

“I know where it is.”

“There are locked rooms behind the back rows of shelves. That’s the only place I know that they would take your owner. Let me go now. Please.”

“Okay. Just kick your legs, you’ll float.” Nick smirked, hoisted Leo over the rail, and let him go. When Leo made a big splash in the river, floundering, Nick leaned over and shouted, “Don’t get too close to the paddle wheels.”
