Chapter 44

The scenery that went by was riverbank with intermittent piers for fishing boats on one side of the road, woods and fields with the occasional farm were scattered on the other. In other circumstances Nick would have enjoyed the ride. Even as early in the morning as it was, the sun was warm, and there was a soft breeze blowing in from the woods, giving the air a sweet scent.

Once they arrived in the closer of the two towns, Todd guided the carriage through the streets, careful not to take a direct route to the building where they’d met Benning. The carriage was left a few blocks away, nearer to the outside bazaar. Again, Heidi took Todd’s offer of his arm as they strolled down the street, Nick dutifully following behind. To any onlookers, they were tourists meandering the streets.
