Chapter 14

Behind me, Mandy startles us with another snorting sound. “So it’s bad luck now, isn’t it?”

I roll my eyes. Nicky frowns, his gaze still on me. “What is?”

She gives an exaggerated sigh. “It’s bad luck to see the bride—well, the groom, I suppose—before the ceremony. I told him, I told Pat he couldn’t see you. Instead, you’re meant to meet us there, waiting for your first sight of Pat, all dressed up and ready for your vows. Don’t you guys have anyidea of how your wedding’s meant to go?”

I keep gazing at Nicky. Never gonna get tired of that, it seems. “Stupid superstition. I’ve decided I’m abandoning all that. Maybe we don’t know how this marriage thing is meant to go….”

“And maybe we do.” He steps forward into the hallway, a couple of feet from me. Tall, well-cut hair, big grin, beautiful suit. My hands know exactlywhat they want to do now, but I’m pretty sure it’s not appropriate in full view of the street outside.

“But do we?” I ask brokenly.
