“You don’t want to be rich because of the way your family handled money. I get that, but maybe you could let yourself have more. You can still help people from a nice apartment, even if you give away more than you spend on yourself. You should let yourself have nice things.” Ronan can easily remember waiting outside Dustin’s apartment, with the drug deal going on up the street and the graffiti all around. It hadn’t seemed nice, and as an ex-cop it had worried Ronan—it didn’t feel safe.
“Maybe. I keep thinking of making changes, but then I get scared that’ll fuck everything up. I’ve managed to get a balance. I’m helping people, and I’m not living my parents’ life. That’s all that mattered to me for a long time. But maybe I can make some changes without it all going to shit.” Dustin bites his lip.
It’s clear he’s been thinking about this. Ronan hopes he decides he deserves more in life than he lets himself have.
