Chapter 57

“You can tell me, but only if you want to,” Dustin says, taking a sip of his wine.

“It’s not a long story, really. Sarah was ten; she was the most beautiful person, full of light and joy. She was the apple of my dad’s eye. I guess we all spoiled her, even Mom. We were all so happy when Sarah was alive, a perfect family.” Ronan can hardly keep his eyes on Dustin, but he’s determined to get this story out. More people should know about Sarah. She shouldn’t be forgotten. She was like an angel long before she was taken from them.

“What happened to her?” Dustin asks, reaching out and taking Ronan’s hand, which is clenched into a fist.

He hadn’t even noticed, but when Dustin gets him to loosen his fist so they can hold hands, Ronan can tell from the feeling in his joints that he’d been clenching his fist awhile.
