Chapter 20

James rolled a tray in with tea and assorted cakes as Paulo motioned for Karden to have a seat. He pulled the chair next to him out for Daniel. “I have everything ready for the project, dear Daniel,” he said, pouring a cup and placing two lumps of sugar into it. “We can leave for Wales next week and have three days to examine the book.” He placed the cup in front of Daniel.

The spoon in Karden’s hand clattered to his saucer. “The book isn’t here?” He glanced at Daniel, who must have shown his lack of surprise at the announcement. Karden folded his hands and placed them on the table in front of him. “Dr. Guerrieri, please don’t tell me I have brought this man here under false pretenses. I have a strict policy of not lying to those with whom I work.”

Paulo was already waving his statements away. “I have pages he can see. No worries for you, SignoreTempleton.” He turned to Daniel. “But when he seesthe pages, he will no doubt fly with me to uncover the truth.”
