Daniel took another steadying breath before answering. “Once upon a time,” he replied.
Karden shot him a smile that threated to ignite his barely tethered emotions. “Poor Rapunzel,” he murmured. Looking back at the photos, Karden asked, “Why so many photos with no people in it? You have a thing for landscapes?”
“Not really,” Daniel replied flatly. He had old photos of people they visited, but most were covered in Paulo and his paramours. Though it had been years, Daniel’s pride still tweaked at the idea he shared his first love with every man they visited. He had no desire to return to Paulo, yet Daniel knew that his picture could be hanging on a wall amid a collection of snapshots of Paulo with his constant parade of men.
Karden raised an eyebrow in question, but didn’t say anything. He moved to the climate-controlled case that housed manuscripts waiting for examination. “You studied to work with old books?” he asked, peering past the pristine glass to the papyrus.
