“Nicky told me,” said Sam, sitting quietly for a moment. He tapped his thumbs again. “And if the professor was no longer part of the project? Would that change the scope?”

Daniel shook his head. “No. Honestly, Dr. Guerrieri has a much better chance of confirming the book with his contacts,” he said, ignoring the narrowed glance from Karden. “Look,” he told Sam. “I can get your employer some background information and the possible journey the codex…book…traveled. But that’s about all I can provide. That’s probably why Dr. Guerrieri came to me in the first place.” That, and apparently wanting me to be the one to deal with your employer, Daniel added to himself. It wasn’t the first time Paulo had stuck a colleague with placating the investors. It was the first time in Daniel’s knowledge that the investors came with a set of matching wise guys in tailored suits. He wondered into what exactly Paulo had gotten himself, and why he was getting taken along for the ride.
