Chapter 32

Maddy exchanged a look with Jazz, then leaned in toward Daniel. “I have some friends who might be able to help,” he said.

“You bring Marines?” asked Nathan. Maddy shook his head with a small smile. Nathan looked at Frank. “Don’t you know his people?”

Frank threw his hands in innocence. “What? All Italians know one another? I came here from St. Louis to attend the Art Institute’s culinary program. Most I can do is tell you how they probably cook ziti—poorly.”

A slew of Italian burst across the rooftop. From Sury’s tone, Paulo was not getting off lightly. Maddy leaned in closer to be heard over the verbal barrage. “When I first got back from the military, I had friends who had…trouble…readjusting to civilian life,” he said.

“They were treated like criminals, even though they fought for this country,” said Jazz. “Baby, that is not readjusting, that is just being a black man in a city in America.”
