Daniel nudged Karden. “It takes all kinds of chemistry to confirm the dates of the pages and ink, not to mention the work done in a way that preserves the piece,” explained Daniel. Karden nodded, and Daniel suppressed a smile at his disappointed look. He leaned in closer. “Did you think we would explore an ancient relic and find hidden treasure?” he teased. “Or slide through a tap door to a secret tomb?”

“If you are looking for an ancient relic, I’d be happy to show you where we found the piece,” said a voice from the door. Daniel froze, his smile vanishing. Closing his eyes for a moment, he made a silent wish that the voice would not match the man from his memory. No such luck, he thought as the man approached.

“Hello, Daniel.”
