“I hear you,” Leo said after a long pause. “I do. I hear every word of what you’re saying, and I understand why you’re saying it. Thank you for being my friend.”

This time Jeff did look at him. “Wow, you really were raised by hippies.” He grinned when Leo growled, then his expression fell back to serious. “You’re a fixer, Leo. Of all problems great and small. It’s an amazing trait, but it’s also something that a certain kind of person preys on. There are people out there that either don’t have the capacity or the desire to fix their own shit, and I don’t mean just their cars or their door hinges. Helping is one thing, but trying to be the bandage every time somebody slices a piece out of themselves is another.”
