He gave Gordy a quick kiss on the mouth. “I can’t wait.”

“All right, that’s got us done here,” the super said, ticking a row of boxes on his clipboard. His inspection had been one of the fastest that Leo had ever experienced, although, in all fairness, Leo did his own repairs and liked to believe that he was one of the most low-maintenance tenants the super had. Even still, it seemed like the man had speed-walked through the apartment, barely flicking a look into the bedroom, the bathroom, or the kitchen, and beelining it for the smoke detector. “Sign here to say you witnessed the battery change and test, will you?” He pointed after Leo scribbled. “And here, to say I left you the fire exit strategy.”

Leo looked at the paperwork. “Kind of pointless, isn’t it? I mean, I’m not even usually home. It’s not like you get a signature the rest of the time.”

The super shrugged. “I don’t make the rules, kid.”
