When he spoke, however, his voice was clear, bright, and strong. “All right so, I have to apologize before we do anything else, Gordon. I should have pulled all this together well before now, but I’m about as organized as debris in a windstorm these days. And she sure did catch us off guard, didn’t she, son? Can you even believe what life throws at you when your back is turned? It’s not going to be the same without her, but I don’t have to tell you that, do I? Are you doing well?”

Gordy merely nodded. Leo wasn’t sure he’d have been able to pull together much more than that himself, let alone figure out which of those questions actually required answers and in what order.

“I knew this was going to be fairly easy,” the lawyer continued. “Which helps. I mean, it doesn’t help that I left you sitting on your hands with Belinda.” He stopped, looked up. “How’s she doing, by the way?”

“Good, good.” Gordy nodded. “So…there’s a problem?” His tone was level, but he squeezed Leo’s hand.
