Chapter 56

Leo shook his head. “Stay out of my head, Dad.”

It wasn’t even ten minutes later when Gordy came out, looking just as dazed and confused as Leo had left him.

“I have a house,” he said. His voice was choked up and distant. “I can’t have a house, Leo. I can’t look after a house. I can’t pay for that. I don’t even know who does the electric. Or who brings the oil for the furnace. I’m not even sure it still isan oil furnace. Who’s going to start the stupid lawnmower for me so I can cut the lawn? Or keep the lawnmower running, for that matter? I can’t run an entire household.”

Leo nodded at the truck. “Come on. Get in. Show me your house. Is it close enough that we can do that?”

Gordy snorted. “It’s like, ten minutes away. Everything is ten minutes away in this town. There’s only about six thousand people in the whole place. There’s one decent store. And it’s a post office, grocery store, liquor store, pharmacy, and MTO location.”
