Chapter 54

Myles had a downright shitty childhood.

“So anyway,” he said, livening up again. “That’s the kind of feeling I’d want to create—you know, in our amusement park. I’d want people in tears when it was time for them to leave.”

I put my glass down on the coffee table between us. “Why did your father take you two there? Ever find out?”

“I think ‘cause it was my birthday.”

Derek sprung up in his seat. “What the bloody hell!”

Myles laughed, shaking his head. “It was his way of doing something for me, I guess.”

“Oh, my God, Myles,” Derek cried. “I hate your father so much.”

“I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to be so depressing.”

“Myles,” I said, being serious, “I’m not depressed. I’m impressed.”

“Yeah, well, look at me now, right back to where I started from.”

“The lesson keeps returning in different forms. Until we get it.”

“I’m starting to understand that part. I really am. Thank you…both of you. It feels good to be here. You guys are amazing.”
