That’s how I spent the first month of my au pair assignment—afternoons twirling on the patio to whatever latest brit-pop or new-wave cassette tape Hasiba happened to be infatuated with that day. Sometimes sun bathing, or horseback riding, but often napping. Naps were important, because our evenings were spent top down, and pedal to the metal in Hasiba’s cherry-red Datsun 280ZX Turbo convertible, speeding from one summer party to the next.
It didn’t take me but a week of party hopping to realize Hasiba’s parents could have saved themselves a ton of money on au pair salaries if they only had the good sense to take the girl’s car keys away. But who was I to argue, the 280ZX was a blast, and Hasiba was a lot of fun, behind the wheel or at home.
