Chapter 5

It was hot that evening, even with the top down on the 280ZX, so after our party clothes got tossed in the hamper, the night clothes stayed in the closet. Hasiba ended up curled on her side and yawning, while I ended up staring at the back of her neck, contemplating the gracefulness of her body. I moved a little closer and breathed her in. She still smelled of oranges. It was intoxicating.

I got as close to her as I could without touching her skin, my lips slightly parted, ready to pull her into my lungs once again. To my surprise, Hasiba rolled over, facing me, her tired eyes half open at best. She smiled. “My guardian angel,” she said. “Always watching over me.”

I felt my face flushing. “I thought you were asleep.”
