Chapter 44

Jesse wasn’t exactly tired—he knew he wouldn’t be able to fall asleep—but he felt like he had been picked up by a giant and twisted and squeezed and wrung out until every drop of energy dripped out of him. Traveling through dimensions with Michelle hadn’t been easy. He could still feel that horrible rift, growing gradually. Maybe no more than a centimeter a year, but growing all the same. Maybe he had felt it from the moment Michelle had made him a Guardian, but he only now realized it. And when he closed his eyes, he saw that girl, begging her lover for mercy. Foster had been ready to watch her writhe and burn, watch her scream, watch her melt and turn into ash.

Jesse would never be able to do that.
