“Hey, I didn’t mean to upset you.” Derek startled her by rising from his chair and coming to her side, perching carefully on the edge of the mattress. “You’ve got a bone with Gideon, and that’s fine. That’s not really an exclusive club.”
She glanced away, unwilling to let him see just how alone she felt. “I’m not upset. I just want this whole thing over with.”
“And it will be.” He almost sounded sincere. Carly wanted desperately to believe him. “What is it you do back in Texas?”
“I’m an accountant.”
“Really?”
The surprise in his voice drew her attention back. “What’s so hard to believe about that?”
Derek shrugged. “I just always pictured accountants as tiny old guys with glasses that slide down their noses so they can look over the rims at you because you don’t know your credit from your debit. You don’t exactly fit that picture.”
